Ashley Newton
CURATED BY ASHLEY NEWTON. A 90’s Trip Hop primer : a wildly influential movement & a personal fave. Downtempo & experimental, a perfect world to escape into and be safe from harm.

These were the songs topping the charts in Dublin, Ireland, when I was in secondary school. We had three popular radio stations 98FM, FM104 & Spin, and they played every genre, an eclectic selection of whatever was made on, or made it onto, the Island! 🇮🇪

Growing up indoctrinated in my parents classic rock and 60’s & early 70’s pop albums, my own music tastes only really emerged as I finished high-school in the mid 2000s. Conflicting tastes driven through internet subcultures in both the indie rock and electronic spaces, which evolved through University (and a campus radio show) into the foundation for my tastes today. Somewhat Canadian leaning, this is the eclectic mix of songs that have shaped my tastes over the years.

A musical introduction to the Madchester scene in the late 80s and early 90s. What was initially a North West of England scene centered around the Hacienda nightclub [owned by New Order and Factory Records] turned into a nationwide cultural phenomenon.
Punk introduced me to politics, art and fashion. It introduced me to dub, reggae and electronic music. For anyone else who grew up in boring suburbia this is for you. Play loud!

Presenting the (painfully uncool) record of my earliest formative listening years, gathered from other kids’ t-shirts & backpacks, car radios, skate videos, BET’s Rap City rotation + used cassette bins in the greater metro Detroit area.

No specific genre – a bit of everything, arranged in loose clusters. This selection is from a large folder of music I’m always adding to: songs and instrumental pieces that take me into my imagination. This is music that suggests film scenes to me, for films that don’t exist (yet).
